I think one of the hardest things to do when you are self employed is to take a “paid personal” day.....or is it? Do you feel yourself being less relaxed as a self employed person or more relaxed. I think the challenge of getting new clients can be daunting, and yet exhilarating at the same time. Ironically, and mistakenly those who didn't really know me often remarked ”oh it's not always about the money”. After hearing that a few times I realized that there seems to be a mentality paradigm. For me working for myself, I use the same mentality that I had as an employee: do the best that I can, provide a good service, stay focused and motivated to achieve better. In my opinion it seems that women who work on their bushiness and have definitive goals are viewed differently than men. Or is the belief that a woman who work from home don't have competitive professional positions? Or what? Was my perspective on maintaining a professional only attitude toward my work an out dated point of view? Just wondering what you think. ...please add your comments. By: Malka Maxwell
Gifts are one of the best tools to use in business. Most times it reflects a marketing edge, and it can open a professional relationship or close the door on one. Corporate gifts are a sensitive subject because if the gifts are used all of the time, however some consideration into the type of gift should be used. The considerations needed to choose a professional gift are: 1.Make the gift appropriate. Gifts given to customers should have two purposes. One purpose is to market your business, and the second purpose is to give something nice away. When you are choosing your giveaway gift make sure it is something that fits both criteria. For instance TD Bank gives away lollipops in their corporate colors. It is something that is nice, yet it reminds you of the company because it is color coded. 2.Make the cost of giving away the product cost efficient. It is nice to give away gorgeous gifts, but remember your budget, and make sure that what you are getting in return is of equal value to you and your business. 3. Keep the recipient in mind. Who are you giving the gift to? Is your portfolio or service visitors people looking for information about you and your services? So a gift that is downloadable such as a booklet, or articles, a sample picture and more may make a nice gift. You determine that. Gift giving can be a fun and when done correctly can improve the image of your business. When doing your on line portfolio giving a gift may be a rewarding tactic. From your on line portfolio you can consider it as another type of business card or marketing item, or as another way to make friends with your visitors and an a remember for them to keep you in mind for future reference. Your employer may be situated miles away from you. Work duties can be accomplished by telephone, fax, and computer. In light of the technological advances that have been made it seems that this is vey underutilized way of working. There are employers however, who do offer telecommuting as an option you do have to search for them, and usually you may be subjected to some requirements in order to be admitted. Telecommuting opportunites have been available for a long time especially in areas of medical and legal transription. Those jobs basicly entail you to transcribe audio files that will be sent to you from your employer. The files are usually recorded by doctors or lawyers and they need a "hard" copy or written form of what was said. The job usually pays per line of typed information that you hear. One audio file can be any where from 15 pages of typed material which would be the equivalent of one hour and half of work. The main requirement for these types of jobs would be to get trained in transcription. There are course on line and off line that could be of assistance. In addition you may need to be familiar with medical and or legal terms to assist you in your transcription. In more recent years, there seems to be a lot more services that are offering help desk representative and secretarial services as well. Again, with these services you will be doing work remotely for an employer that may be situated some distance from you. In a secretarial service you will provide a variety of services including answering telephones from your home location, typing, desk top publishing and payroll. As a customer service representative, you will be briefed by the employer on their product or their services. Your duties will include answering calls from customers on your home telephone, answering on line requests for information. Theses are a few examples of the telcommuting work opportunities. The common theme behind telecommuting is that you will be paid per hour for your work as opposed to a per project basis. The best way to for you to find these types of jobs would be to do a search on the internet under telecommuting. If this search yeilds fruitless, you may consider looking at popular job boards such as Kaboo.org, Craigslist.com, Hotjobs.com, and Careerbuilder.
