A resume is your first contact with a potential employer, and therefore requires a lot of attention. The resume traditionally tells the prospective employer what you have accomplished professionally to date The need or creation of a resume to the best of my knowledge came about quite recently. In the past when someone applied for a job preference was given based on a variety of reasons such as religious affiliation, society or organization affiliations, creed etc. a nd regardless of the perspective employee's abilities. As a result of favoritism, creed prejudice, nepotism and other issues caused a huge employee turn over rate. As a result the concept of a centralized employment department was first written down in the 1920's. The "blue print" or goal of a centralized employment department was to elicit information from prospective employees, and to make it a pleasurable experience. The person in charge of running the departmental was given the title of manager of them employment department, or hiring manager. The application grew out of a need to control the paperwork system used in the past also known as an 'employment form" or the inspiration to the modern day application. The application as we currently call it contained information regarding the interviewee such as education, trade skills marital status and more, as well as the impressions of the interviewer. This form was intended to furnish the reader (hiring manager) with enough information about a perspective employee without ever meeting face to face, and to provide the hiring manager the ability to match the stated skills on the form, to a job description from a foreman, or department manager. The modern day resume is the American name for the Curriculum Vitae ( abbreviation, CV) used in the UK and the Netherlands. The term resume is also used in English Canada. Although a resume tells of your career achievements it should be at least one to pages long. -Malka Maxwell lives on the East Coast of the United States with her children. Every once in a while I read about a job fair. Job fairs can be a good job hunt tool because you get in front of recruiters and get to present your resume, as well as ask questions about a prospective company. In the days of old, it was normal to walk into a place, and leave your resume and know that the candidate employer will call you back for an interview. Today, you tend to send your resume via email (pasted into the body of the email). So lets review how to pull off the big reveal 1.Print out a copy of your resume and references. There are two options to accomplish this. Option one costs money, but alleviates any fear associated with knowing if you have a professional looking resume. That option is to go to a printer and have the employees print out your resume. The other option cost is lower and that is doing it yourself. Either method you use make sure that your resume is printed on a heavier paper than the traditional printing paper. If you are purchasing paper it may be labeled as “resume paper” or “stationary paper.” 2.Make several copies. The old rule of thumb is to have at least four printed copies. If you are going to a job fair, I would suggest more than that especially if you plan to interview at a number of companies. 3.Paper type does matter. Really heavy paper makes the ink spread slightly, you want a crisp look. The paper you choose should be 24 pounds in weight. Use cream or white colored paper for a professional look 4.Its all in the layout. If you are unsure of your layout, do look for some help. There are several sites on line that can help you with the actual layout. They are: resumizer, nice resume, pongo resume and skillcraze. All it takes is a bit of planning and you will be able to make your big reveal as well. Malka Maxwell lives on the East Coast of the United States with her children. Gifts are one of the best tools to use in business. Most times it reflects a marketing edge, and it can open a professional relationship or close the door on one. Corporate gifts are a sensitive subject because if the gifts are used all of the time, however some consideration into the type of gift should be used. The considerations needed to choose a professional gift are: 1.Make the gift appropriate. Gifts given to customers should have two purposes. One purpose is to market your business, and the second purpose is to give something nice away. When you are choosing your giveaway gift make sure it is something that fits both criteria. For instance TD Bank gives away lollipops in their corporate colors. It is something that is nice, yet it reminds you of the company because it is color coded. 2.Make the cost of giving away the product cost efficient. It is nice to give away gorgeous gifts, but remember your budget, and make sure that what you are getting in return is of equal value to you and your business. 3. Keep the recipient in mind. Who are you giving the gift to? Is your portfolio or service visitors people looking for information about you and your services? So a gift that is downloadable such as a booklet, or articles, a sample picture and more may make a nice gift. You determine that. Gift giving can be a fun and when done correctly can improve the image of your business. When doing your on line portfolio giving a gift may be a rewarding tactic. From your on line portfolio you can consider it as another type of business card or marketing item, or as another way to make friends with your visitors and an a remember for them to keep you in mind for future reference. Social networks have been around for ages. What makes the on line social networks so unique is the combination of social and professional goals in one place. A few popular suggestions are to add your picture, detailed information to get more page views. Since social network sites are like anything on the internet, they may be viewable by non-members as well. This article will review what to put into your social network profile to advertise your personal gallery or on line website/portfolio for your job hunt. Easy ways to transform your professional look Tip1. Utilize the member page. When you join a social network page there is a page where you can describe yourself. Mention your on line website or portfolio of your work and add a link on your profile page to that site. This should direct new visitors to your site or portfolio. Tip2: Do a product or service review. Your personal site or portfolio is about your services, product or both. When you do a review of a product or service on a social network you can showcase a service or product that you have. Again, add this on your profile page, or if your blog, and can be done once a month. Tip 3 Use your profile page as a personal website. If you do not have a service or a portfolio that you want to advertise, you can write about what you do in your profile page These tips should be useful in giving you more page views, and hopefully will encourage more people to seek you out for a particular job. On line social networks allow you to connect with other on line users in your particular area of interest. By joining and creating an on line profile you are able to tell others what you are about. Although not a new subject, by now, most people have heard of the connection between the mind and emotions. however, what seems to surprise many is just how closely connected the two are, and how they affect self improvement. Emotions dominate our actions whether we like it or not, even when we don't want them to. For many, the expression of emotions signifies weakness. Often people hold them in, rationalize or simulate emotions. Emotions or feelings will always be felt no matter what you do, therefore the old saying "bricks and stones can break my bones but words won't hurt' is quite untrue. The ability to keep emotions locked away is futile because it holds the rest of your body captive. Trying to replace a negative emotion with a positive doesn't really work. How many of you have lost a pet to either illness, old age, or just good old fashioned lack of care. Did replacing the pet with a new one REALLY make you replace the loss of a pet? You may say of course, or yes...However, you still remember the pets name, and you may call the next pet the same name or use any other of the numerous rituals used to remember the first pet. Now, imagine at your current level of life you have a fight with a loved one. That fight in turn ruins your whole day. You may be able to function during your day as if nothing is wrong, yet others notice that you are "off" a bit. The state of being "off" or ill tempered is a direct result to the fight you had. Imagine if everyday you go through this continuously is there enough money and or prestige in the world to make up for the way you feel? In today's society we have allowed ourselves to be bullies toward others and cruel, untruthful all in the name of "if we treat people well, they will just step on us" mentality. It will be true so long as people hold on to that belief. That belief is what proves you right when someone does ill treat you. You are prepared with your own negativity to get right back. It becomes a war of sorts. Many think there is no time to reflect on our perception of reality, and choose to push down the negative feelings They grow inside you and grow up and out even worse than what you started with. The biggest concern with those of us who ar involved in the quest for self improvement is how to eliminate the negativity completely. Mental health or self improvement is the ability to create a change for the best. Meditation, NLP, Huna, Silva Method, Reikki are just a few of the programs out there that help us get in touch with the feelings that are holding back our ability to change. Once we reach those areas in the deeper part of our mind, and FEEL the pain that we have been holding on to (by not releasing it or even acknowledging it) we will see noticeable change almost immediately. Being completely happy all of the time is close to impossible but you want to reach a point where you can look at your life and count many moments where you experience utter joy. When your reality is too overwhelming you can try this simple exercise to help shift your perception. First find a quiet place (if possible) but at least clear your mind. Tell the wandering thoughts to get out. Second take a deep breath. Third create a safe place to be in. A safe place may be a song, a physical activity, or an imaginary place in your mind. Being in a safe place gives your mind a time to rest from whatever negativity you are thinking. After your mind clears you may be tempted to stay in your safe place all of the time. That is not a good idea, the safe place is a tool to help you shift your negativity by helping you get immersed in a new thought process through a new action. After you leave your space you will have more energy and information to deal with the issues around you. To find out getting in touch with our feelings, search for the above mentioned programs and I am sure there are others to see what closely fits your style. Since computers allow us the ability to seek out information almost instantly, then the cost of mental health upkeep can be relatively low. Having a disability is difficult enough, there are a lot of learning and studying involved to find the best possible way to make your or your child's life comfortable. Many parents of children who have disabilities tend to research a lot and connect to the proper agencies. What if you are an adult, or a person who has lived a life with no disability and face becoming disabled? Where can you go to learn more? The internet is a wonderful research tool for that type of information, however, you may learn about these two resources: I.D.E.A. And the A.D.A. I.D.E. A. is an acronym for Individuals With Disabilities Education Act. This particular Act is pertinent to those individuals who have disabilities between the ages of birth to 21 years of age. The particulars of the Act include the right (afforded by the US Constitution) meaning it is Federal Law, to ensure States provide education services (or Early Intervention) to people who have disabilities in 13 specific disability categories. The two main goals of the Act is to ensure that children who have disabilities are taught life skills thus ensuring their ability to work, further their education, and live an independent life. And two, to make sure that a free education is available and designed to meet the needs of students who have disabilities. This law is specifically for organizations that receive federal money to support their programs. The A.D.A. Is an acronym for the American Disabilities Act. This Act disallows employers to discriminate against an employee or even a potential employee due to disability. This Act is applicable to private sector, State and Municipal jobs. Other areas of interest included in this Act are communications, public transportation, and the United States Congress. In addition to the above mentioned laws there are laws that prohibit against housing discrimination, provide the right to vote, provide the right to all other human rights. Remember these are all applicable if you live independently or within a facility. Ignorance of laws is not an excuse, and by you searching out the proper places to get help you can provide yourself and others who may have a disability with the safety they require. Gaining the knowledge is only part of the equation, seeking out others who may be able to help you is the other part and lastly making the general public aware is the last part of this equation. The United States constitution was created to remind us of the rights we have been given by God, and created laws to make sure no one infringes upon those rights. As citizens of the United States you must be vigilant in seeking out the knowledge to protect your rights so that you may live a better life, but in addition to make sure all citizens continue to be protected regardless of age, race and religion thus creating a tolerant society for all. Let me explain. By now, you may be one of the millions of people who seems to be on the internet all day. You spend time on Facebook, Twitter, My Space, you name it. The social network sites are based upon a belief system of creating relationships. Now, if you have ever paid attention to anything anyone (including me) have been saying about job searches; using soft contact s to recruit you or get you referrals for jobs. So, you may say you don't have any contacts.....but wait..are you sure? What about your contact list on Linked In, Facebook, forums you haunt? Do any of those folks know you are even looking for a job? Once you start to look outside the proverbial box, and examine your relationships there is no limit to where you may reach. Embrace technology and use it to solve your job search. Instead of only looking at only job boards, looking in the phone book, or whatever you are doing make sure you put on your to do list "ask my social network friends" or "network" on that list. There are a few idea books floating around the internet regarding quick ways to make money. I must admit that these types of books intrigue me because it is imperative to have some type of income while you are looking for job, or if you need to make additional income. The “get paid” to fill in the blank field is vast, and although not new, you must do your due diligence in searching out the best gigs. Some of these money makers are tasks such as reading paid email, taking surveys. With due diligence you will find those legitimate gigs. With a positive outlook you will make some type of money, but fret not if it isn't instant. On a side note, I'd like to believe that many have made a decent living using these gigs . How do you set up your miscellaneous help wanted or get paid gig? Let me walk you through the steps: 1. Know that any income you make is just that income. You should keep track of the money. In my opinion, if there is a payout option to receive cash, try and use Pay Pal. Pay Pal has a recognized system for record keeping. 2. Set up a way to keep your personal information safe, you will be required to give your personal information 3. Register a new email account for this exclusive use. It has been said that you can get a lot of spam from these places but more than that I am sure the companies surveys and product test requests are the bulk of your email. 4. Register a voice mail company (free if possible) if you choose the option to allow these companies to call you. This way you can monitor the call traffic to your phone line. 5. Identify the type of miscellaneous job you would like to take on. The choices are: surveys, paid emails, and product testing. 6. Register at the various sites, start to let your points, or money collect. Aim for a cashout price. 7. Cashout or keep letting your money pile up. There you have it. The best places to start are those that others recommend. Make sure the rules are applicable to your country and try them out. If the site you register with works for you, keep using it! Good Luck! -Malka Maxwell Malka Maxwell This was written by Malka Maxwell © 2010 How To Get Ahead With Resumes. This article is for non-commercial use. Your employer may be situated miles away from you. Work duties can be accomplished by telephone, fax, and computer. In light of the technological advances that have been made it seems that this is vey underutilized way of working. There are employers however, who do offer telecommuting as an option you do have to search for them, and usually you may be subjected to some requirements in order to be admitted. Telecommuting opportunites have been available for a long time especially in areas of medical and legal transription. Those jobs basicly entail you to transcribe audio files that will be sent to you from your employer. The files are usually recorded by doctors or lawyers and they need a "hard" copy or written form of what was said. The job usually pays per line of typed information that you hear. One audio file can be any where from 15 pages of typed material which would be the equivalent of one hour and half of work. The main requirement for these types of jobs would be to get trained in transcription. There are course on line and off line that could be of assistance. In addition you may need to be familiar with medical and or legal terms to assist you in your transcription. In more recent years, there seems to be a lot more services that are offering help desk representative and secretarial services as well. Again, with these services you will be doing work remotely for an employer that may be situated some distance from you. In a secretarial service you will provide a variety of services including answering telephones from your home location, typing, desk top publishing and payroll. As a customer service representative, you will be briefed by the employer on their product or their services. Your duties will include answering calls from customers on your home telephone, answering on line requests for information. Theses are a few examples of the telcommuting work opportunities. The common theme behind telecommuting is that you will be paid per hour for your work as opposed to a per project basis. The best way to for you to find these types of jobs would be to do a search on the internet under telecommuting. If this search yeilds fruitless, you may consider looking at popular job boards such as Kaboo.org, Craigslist.com, Hotjobs.com, and Careerbuilder. There is an option in their search for telecommute positions. Malka Maxwell is an Independent Consultant and author of “How To Get Ahead With Resumes (revised)”.
